‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 6, episode 6 review: Can Penny get through college without help?

“The Big Bang Theory” has painted Penny as a pretty girl, who has street smarts and not book smarts, but in this episode we are going to see that put to the test when Penny decides that it’s time that she goes back to college to finish her diploma. Can she get through her classes without leaning on Leonard for help? We think she can and that her intelligence has been under estimated just because she surrounds herself with geniuses.

Penny goes back to college to finish up her diploma and finally graduate, but with Leonard as a boyfriend, she feels that she should probably do this on the down low and not tell him since he would get overly excited and probably want to do everything for her. This is her chance to feel accomplished on her own and we applaud her for it. Bernadette and Amy end up talking her into telling Leonard about her college classes and after reading her paper, he feels that she needs a lot of help and re-writes the whole thing. When he shows the re-written paper to Penny she’s upset because she doesn’t feel that Leonard believes that she can get through college herself… that he doesn’t believe in her. Later Penny gets a B- on her paper and pushes it in Leonard’s face for not thinking she was smart enough to do it on her own, but really she had help from the ladies in writing it, which was a bit of a let down.

We were a little disappointed to see that Penny needed help with her paper no matter what she did. We like her character a lot, but have never really liked that the show sometimes paints her as dumb, when really she comes off more as someone that is just normal. Penny is someone that can get through college on her own and we would’ve liked to have seen that episode end with her doing it on her own. Episode grade: C+
