‘Fear the Walking Dead’ spoilers: Boss on crossovers, plan for season 1

With the premiere of “Fear the Walking Dead” coming to AMC a little bit later this summer, at least some of the first substantial teasers are starting to come out about what the upcoming six episodes could hold.

One thing that we can at least confirm for now is that there will be no crossover between this show and the flagship one, at least for the time being. As showrunner Dave Erickson tells TVLine, he is taking a “never say never” approach to the idea, but at the same time is also very well of the logistical problems that would exist there. “Fear the Walking Dead” is set in Los Angeles and films in Vancouver, while “The Walking Dead” itself is set in Georgia and also films there. There is also the timeline problem given that the spin-off is for now more of a prequel.

Erickson does also add that for the six-episode first season, one of the goals is to establish a universe and tell a story that feels at least reasonably complete. There will be something left over for the second season, but there are no concrete plans to tie everything up in a neat little bow:

“It’s written as a six-hour movie and that’s the feel we want to have. That said, we’re building to a place of emotional fracture for our characters and getting to a place where we will definitely be setting up the emotional conflicts that we want to either heal or continue to fracture over the course of Season 2. We’ll be ready from an emotional standpoint to launch into the next season, [but[ it’ll also be a satisfying ending.”

“Fear the Walking Dead” was renewed for another season weeks ago, which should serve as yet another reminder of the extreme confidence that AMC has in this becoming an enormous hit for them. Ultimately, there is no reason to think that it will be anything other than a smash given the popularity of the original and the hunger for new summer programming.
