What a ‘Mad Men’ season 8 could be … if anything
“Mad Men” is over. That is not a particularly easy thought to digest, but it is still true. This is a show that was so beloved for so long, but the wheels have finally come off and it has a chance to rest in peace now within a TV graveyard. Hopefully, many of you found the finale worthy of some reverence.
Given that the trend is now, though, to somehow revive shows from the dead, we do want to go ahead and ask the preemptive question right now: Is it really possible that this could happen here with this particular show? We have to say for the time being that the answer to that is “no,” almost definitively. Reviving series for another season is only really effective when the shows have an ongoing nature. For example, you can always come up with more “Arrested Development” or bring back “Full House” many generations later.
With this show, it’s conclusive. There is no reason to revisit any element of this unless there was a spin-off planned, and this is no “Breaking Bad” with “Better Call Saul.” In this case, you let the work speak for itself, and move on to other things. Jon Hamm already has movie roles lined up, Elisabeth Moss has taken to Broadway, and John Slattery is busier perhaps than he has ever been.
We are still excited to see what the cast and crew do next, and maybe through some of that work, the spirit of “Mad Men” will in fact remain.
