‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 finale spoilers: Are we moving towards something with Meredith, Alex?

While “Grey’s Anatomy” is not necessarily a show about romance, we would be remiss to sit here and say that it is a show that really ignores romance altogether. It’s a huge part of the fabric, and for many years the feeling was that the series would end with Meredith and Derek doing the metaphorical walk-off-towards-the-sunset together. Now, Ellen Pompeo’s character has to rethink everything, and to a certain extent, that includes the folks on the writing staff, as well! This is not a situation that anyone was necessarily prepared for, but one that they are going to be dealing with nonetheless now that Patrick Dempsey is gone.

So with Derek out of the picture, is it possible that Meredith and Alex could suddenly now become endgame? There may be a certain contingent who want her to be happy, even if she may not be for a while. For us, it would just be strange to cross that line after so much time, and it would undo most of the work that he has put in to his relationship with Jo. This is something that Camilla Luddington touches on in previewing the finale to The Hollywood Reporter, though she also makes it very clear that she is not ruling out such a hookup, either:

“It’s Shondaland, anything can happen! … But what’s really nice about Alex and Meredith is we’re seeing a very platonic relationship … it doesn’t have to be sexual and they can love each other in a way that’s really deep.”

Maybe there is going to be some tension with Meredith and Alex moving forward, but we do not see the sole source of it being him and Meredith getting closer. Instead, you also have to think about the relationshi
