ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8: Nathan Fillion signs on; Stana Katic’s status in limbo
We come today bearing bearing both some good news and bad news in regards to “Castle.” Let’s start with the good: Nathan Fillion has officially signed a new deal to come back for the eighth season of the show. In many ways, his status was the biggest question mark, with there being countless rumors surrounding whether or not he wanted to return. We feel like this is a great position for him personally; he makes a great deal of money from the gig, and he can use his spare time pursuing and working on some other projects.
However, we turn now to the bad news: There is no word yet on the future of Stana Katic. Fillion’s longtime co-star has not signed a new deal yet; also, TVLine reports that showrunner David Amann and creator Andrew W. Marlowe (plus writing and producing partner Terri Edda Miller) will all be departing to work on various other projects. Will this show even be the same when it comes back?
When it comes to Stana, we do think that a deal here will eventually get done. She is a cornerstone of the series, and it has brought her some great opportunities and even some love from the People’s Choice Awards. The show may give us a cliffhanger that suggests that she could depart at the end of the season, but we believe she’ll be back.
Granted, ABC has not officially renewed the show yet, but now that Fillion is on board, we feel like he will. We feel like you need both him and Beckett to make this show great, but remember here that “The Vampire Diaries” is moving forward without Elena. It’s not crazy to think that ABC decides to do another season without Stana on board.

I’m glad that the article mentioned Stana as one of the cornerstones of the series. To me Stana is a more important part of the series than Nathan though I like Nathan and his role. When I think of Castle with Castle missing I think that it would still be an interesting detective series. When I think of Castle with Beckett missing all I can think of is what do I do watch Castle typing a book? Hopefully, though, I hope that ABC uses the opportunity to take the role of Beckett to new heights and satisfies her desire for art possibly to include some directing experience.

Let’s face it the backbone of the series as it stands now is that Beckett is Castle’s muse and as such she provides fodder for Castle’s novels. Without Beckett or a substitute muse the series will fall apart because there will be nothing for Castle to do.
On another note Andrew and David are leaving the series. Also Beckett and Castle are preparing bucket lists and career plans (mountains to scale). There could be no better timing for this because it can serve as a basis for new back stories that can develop the characters in different ways to creat the art that Stana wants. For example: Beckett is to be faced with a crossroads later this season. What if this were to be a decision to accept a promotion as Captain of her own precinct (the 12th maybe) or to accept an appointment to the remainder of Senator Bracken’s Senate seat with support for future elections. And, this is just one possible scenario. Another could be to have children (which could even be done in conjunction with other scenarios). I will not say that the possibilities are endless but there are certainly several.
