‘Poldark’ episode 6 review: Aidan Turner and a game of cards

Going into Sunday night’s new episode of “Poldark,” we were very curious to see what the future of Ross and his smelting company would be in the wake of everything that has transpired. While he is not necessarily a man who has lost everything, he has most definitely sacrificed a great deal. No longer is he the man returning to the war with big dreams. Instead, he is already jaded, and found himself with his back against the wall during what has to be the most intense card games of all time.

Should we be even remotely surprised that there was an element of cheating here? We’re going to go ahead and give you a simple answer to that question: No. It is impossible to have any other reaction to this at all! Ross’ fit of rage was short-lived here ultimately, though, mostly because he had so many other problems that he was forced to deal with here.

Specifically, we are speaking here in terms of what Ross went through with Verity, Francis, and Andrew. Verity had a chance to make a choice, and this is something that will cause further tension to detonate between the two men, who already had differences of opinion when it comes to how to handle George.

This episode concluded with more of a somber graveside scene that summed up much of the action in this episode, but the truest statement is this: Ross is an ambitious man, and someone who tries his absolute best to do the right thing. Sometimes he succeeds, whereas at other moments he does not. He has to learn that there is only so much he can do in this world.

While we found this episode to be a little hard-to-follow at times, the atmosphere, coupled with Aiden Turner’s great performance, continues to make this show captivating. Grade: B.
