Dermot O’Leary leaving ‘The X Factor,’ and we are instantly sad

More news -Who knew that so much “X Factor“-related news would be breaking within the span of a few days? Earlier this week, we learned that Zayn Malik is leaving One Direction, undoubtedly the most famous act to ever come out of the British singing show. Today, we also learned that the series has lost its longtime host in Dermot O’Leary. Dermot has been with the show since 2007, and we honestly admit that when we first heard the rumors that he may be departing, we thought it was just posturing that would lead to him coming back.

Unfortunately, that is not the case, and it could be the first of many changes for the singing show. In a statement today, O’Leary had the following to say:

“After eight wonderful years on The X Factor it’s time for me to move on … I’d like to thank ITV, Simon [Cowell], The X Factor family and particularly the viewers, all of whom have been a big part of my life for so long.”

Personally, we’re gutted by this. Dermot was a tremendous, underrated part of the show, and one of our favorites on all TV. He knew when to be funny, when to to be empathetic, and also how to keep the train from going off the tracks. Next to Ant and Dec and Tom Bergeron from “Dancing with the Stars,” he may do one of the best jobs hosting out of anyone.

We’ve heard rumors linking him with the now-open spot on “Top Gear,” but we would love to see him come to North America and try his hand hosting something out here. We’re not entirely sure what it would be yet, but someone with his energy and humor could be appreciated.
