‘Girls’ season 5: Exec on show’s long-term future
Are we getting near the end of the road finally for “Girls” on HBO? This is a question that we wondered to ourselves yesterday, and there was one major reason for it: There is only so much time that we can believably continue along this premise. Eventually, you want to see these characters grow up, and start to stretch their legs in this world.
This is something that Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner both seem to be very much aware of. Konner spoke to The Hollywood Reporter following the finale airing, and explained that there are no set-in-stone plans just yet when it comes to the series’ future. However, there are specific goals that they have, and they include making sure the show does not drag on forever:
“I would say season five, I’m hoping, will really inform how much further we want to go. Once we figure out what season five is, we’ll know whether it’s another year Maybe it’s just one more year, maybe we wrap it up in six. It all depends. But also we’re not in the business of running it into the ground. We would like to end in a graceful place. And we’d like to tell a complete story. What that means is that we really have to start building towards an end soon, creatively.”
From an outside perspective, it does feel like the best move the show could make at this point is to end the series sooner rather than later, and leave you wanting more. However, who knows? If they have a really good idea for two more seasons, this may be the favorable road to go. They really just need to let us in on what direction they plan to take these characters, because following them on a journey to no where and no self improvement would be a major let down.
