‘Girls’ season 4 finale review: A home birth, Marnie’s decision, and Adam’s big move
Tonight, “Girls” came to a conclusion on HBO, and it did so with an episode that was in many ways strong, and surprisingly mature. These characters all showed some signs of growing up in their own way.
For Hannah, the biggest surprise was not necessarily the news that she helped to welcome Caroline’s child into the world (who was eventually named after her and Jessa). Instead, she actually showed that she was not just going to fall back on being with Adam all over again. We’ve come to learn time and time again that this was her comfortable place, but not a relationship that is actually good for her. In the flash-forward at the very end, we learned that within six months, she actually does move forward and prove to a certain someone that she is not all about the drama, as he once feared about her.
Through her counseling Caroline, Jessa realized that therapy may actually be her true calling. It was an interesting surprise, but one that we at the same time thoroughly endorse as an interesting move for this character. She could actually help people, while helping herself in the process.
Finally, Marnie learned to stand on her own to feet without Desi, and also with the help of Ray (well, define “help”). This was a major step forward in her musical career, and of course Ray probably sees a part of this as key that he could get back with her someday in a more functioning relationship.
Overall, a toast to Lena Dunham and company on a solid, heartfelt conclusion to season 4. Change is in fact possible. Grade: A-.
