ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 7, episode 18 review: Seamus Dever reminds us of why we love Kevin Ryan

CastleWe love Ryan, like are crazy obsessed with him, so when they have an episode of “Castle” that is Ryan-centric we can’t help but get excited. So what kind of trouble is Ryan getting into tonight?

Ryan’s brother in law, Frank, has him on a new security job that has him protecting a congressman named Alex that is hoping to run for president some day soon. He feels that Ryan mostly needs to be playing defense on anyone trying to snag photos of him, but Ryan quickly sees that there are a few people that aren’t a fan of Alex. When Alex and Carolyn are shot at an event, Ryan and Frank work to find out who is responsible.

Castle and Beckett were of course still involved in the episode as one of the victims of the shooting ended up dying. With one of the victims now dead, Ryan is even more emotionally involved in the case, but with the help of the rest of the team they are able to get his head back on straight. Castle’s conspiracy theories are rarely true, but as it turns out his theories are correct on this case and Ryan was the first to buy into them. Ryan and Castle play off each other so well when it comes to conspiracy theories since they both pull each other into the craziness.

When a photo surfaces that places Frank in the place of the shooter, things get very complicated for Ryan. He goes to talk to his sister to find out what kind of trouble Frank is in: She tells him that Frank has brought in over $50,000 in cash over the past year telling her that he had just been working a lot of extra shifts, but he’s really selling extra press passes to events. When Ryan confronts Frank he tells Ryan that he didn’t shoot anyone, but Ryan isn’t buying it. Although Frank isn’t looking that great with his connection to the murder, it turns out that the murderer was once of Alex’s teammates named Megan who thought she was going to get left behind in his campaign, so she tried to take out Carolyn to secure her place.

We haven’t had a episode all about Ryan in a while, so this was a nice treat for fans of the character. It was exciting, layered and gave us yet another reminder of what an incredible actor Seamus Dever is. Episode grade: A-
