‘Call the Midwife’ season 4 finale: Charlotte Ritchie reflects on joining after Jessica Raine exit

Call the Midwife -Call the Midwife” season 4 has certainly been a rather strange year for the show. There haven’t been a whole lot of overarching stories, and to go along with that, cast turnover has been at least partially substantial. Jessica Raine left before the start of the fourth season, and while Miranda Hart is still technically a part of the series, she is not exactly around the majority of the time.

So going into this season, was Charlotte Ritchie nervous as the newcomer? You better believe it, and it is certainly understandable that she would be. Speaking per the Mirror in a new interview, the actress proclaimed that she was worried that she would be slighted by series fans who were longing for more of Jenny, only to have this new woman in Nurse Gilbert around:

“I was nervous about arriving as she left because I’d always watched the show with her in it. It was strange for me to see it without her, and that’s how I thought the fans would be feeling.”

For the most part, though, fans have been positive, and the show continues to be a ratings force on the BBC. The series has even been renewed for a fifth season already, which gives everyone a little bit of job security … provided that they all want to stay on the job. Given that we lost Raine and Hart seems to be more of a part-time employee these days, we are still relatively nervous that more changes could be coming. Then again, this is also probably realistic to new life for there to be so many different people who come in and out of the world of Nonnatus House.
