“Dancing with the Stars” definitely loves to snag contestants who have been in and out of the headlines, and with that in mind, should you really be that shocked to learn that Michael Sam is reportedly going to be a contestant?
According to a new report from TMZ, the openly gay football player, who made national news after coming out before being drafted by the St. Louis Rams, is going to be one of the contestants this season. What is a little bit interesting about his casting is that in joining this show, Sam is going to be spending so much time preparing to rumba and cha cha that it could be hard for him to get another job in the NFL in the immediate future. There have been current NFL athletes on the show before, but most of them were already established or on a team (heck, Malcolm Butler has been rumored to be a part of this season, as well).
With this being said, we don’t blame Sam for wanting to be a part of this show. One thing that you have to remember here is that it’s hard to gauge whether or not he will get an NFL gig even if he focuses solely on football. This is a source of good money, and a chance for him to further share his message. His participation will draw attention to the show, as well, and maybe get even more ratings.
The new season of “Dancing with the Stars” premieres on March 16, and the full cast should be revealed on “Good Morning America” Tuesday.
