‘Sleepy Hollow’ season 3: On renewal expectations, story hopes, and more

Sleepy -Tonight, the end is here for the second season of “Sleepy Hollow.” Fox is saying farewell to the supernatural drama for at least the spring, and depending on what they decide, it theoretically could be forever. Tonight could be the series finale.

With that being said, we do feel like it is ultimately very unlikely that this is going to happen. As a matter of fact, we would say right now that we are fairly optimistic the show still has some sort of future. The ratings may not be great, but they are better than “Backstrom” or anything that constitutes the network’s comedy block. There will also be schedule holes in the fall without “American Idol.” “Bones,” “Gotham,” and “Empire” are the current scripted stalwarts of the lineup.

The reason we’re hopeful for a season 3, even if it is just for 13 episodes, is that Fox cannot count on new series to carry so much of the burden come next fall. Put on something you already know rather well, especially something that has a pretty strong international following.

If there is a reason to have a little fear, it is that nobody seems to be altogether pleased with the creative for season 2. The stories were at times flimsy, and Katrina became the butt of the joke time and time again. Let it be said here that we don’t blame Katia Winter in the slightest for this; the material just never gave her anything interesting to do but be a part of some weird family drama with Ichabod, Abraham, and Jeremy. Evil Katrina is far more interesting, but it took us a while to get here.

We assume that we will know about “Sleepy Hollow’s” fate before the Fox upfronts in May. While we would not necessarily write it into the schedule with permanent market, we would at least pencil it in for now.
