‘Supergirl’ spoilers: Laura Benanti cast to play mom to Melissa Benoist’s Kara

The cast for the “Supergirl” series is starting to come more and more together, even if today we are speaking a little bit more about a recurring player a la John Wesley Shipp on “The Flash.”

According to Deadline, Laura Benanti, who is currently playing a key part on ABC’s “Nashville,” has been tapped to recur on the CBS project as Alura Zor-El, the mother of Kara (Melissa Benoist) who sends her daughter to Earth to avoid the destruction of Krypton. She obviously has a key part in the character’s origin story, and it will be interesting to see how she factors into the show the rest of the way.

This series is obviously still a big risk for everyone involved, given that CBS has not delved much into the superhero-show game, and typically genre fare has a harder time getting a mainstream audience. We’ve said it before, but we still would not mind at all if the ends up going to The CW instead. Greg Berlanti already has both “Arrow” and “The Flash” there, and they are the best thing going right now when it comes to comic-book adaptations. Yep, we’re throwing some of the movies in there as well.

Given that the “Supergirl” pilot is filming over the next several months, we imagine that we should have a whole lot more to report about it very soon. Be on the lookout for a whole lot more when it comes to that very soon!
