‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 spoilers: Unexpected deaths may be coming…
If you think back to the first season of “Game of Thrones,” it actually did a pretty exemplary job of staying true to the famed George R.R. Martin novel. There were some scenes that almost felt like straight adaptations.
However, since that time, we have seen the show take many a liberty from the source material. Sometimes, there are explanations for it, with the biggest one being that there are only ten episodes here a season. Certain characters have to be abandoned, or their stories forgotten, just so that the narrative of the show to make sense. At other points, we apparently are also going to see moments where characters die in the TV show who may not die in the books (at least not yet) … and that gives you a new reason to worry about season 5. For some more insight into this particular subject, just take a look at what Martin himself had to say in a Showbiz 411 interview:
“People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy.”
There are two different ways in which to read this statement: Either book readers will be unhappy because they’ve lost a beloved character, or because there are further changes to the series that they’ve come to know and love.
We understand that there need to be changes to have the TV show work, and so we have enough faith in showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to the point where we don’t worry. What we would be concerned about is if the show managed to get ahead of the books in terms of events; we want it to stay so that the book readers are always rewarded first.
