‘Saturday Night Live’ review: The Californians, Weekend Update, Stefon, Garth & Cat

Saturday Night Live -We thought that the first hour of the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special was pretty hilarious, but somehow, the second hour really put forward the effort to make this even more special than it already was … and it was already pretty darn special. As with the first hour, we’re going to share some assorted highlights of what we found particularly notable.

The Californians – There is a part of us that wants to let out a very loud, noticeable groan with this sketch, which we do consider to be one of our least favorites from the entire run of the show. After all, it is always too long, and while we understand Los Angeles area traffic very well, that doesn’t mean that we need to hear about it all the time! Great cameos by Kerry Washington, Taylor Swift, Kristen Wiig, and many more, though.

Weekend Update – This was, to use a single word, glorious. Not only were there celebrity guests, there were celebrities impersonating “SNL” characters! Emma Stone and Melissa McCarthy each made brief appearances, and we also had Edward Norton pretending to be Stefon until he was interrupted by Bill Hader as Stefon. Nice, brief, Seth Meyers cameo in here, as well.

The Musical Montage – Pure genius. Hosted by Martin Short and Maya Rudolph as Beyonce, there were so many funny appearances in here. This included the likes of Bill Murray, Garth & Cat (ugh), “What Up with That” (Jason Sudeikis wore the track suit again!), Adam Sandler’s opera singer, and so many more. We really have to watch this for a second time to appreciate it.

While we have sketches that we love and hate more than others, it was clear almost immediately that this is something we’re going to need to go back and re-watch to full appreciate it.
