‘House of Lies’ season 4, episode 6 review: Chaos at a charity party
Sunday night’s new episode of “House of Lies” aired against the Grammys, so we’re not sure just how many people really had the opportunity to check it out live. Regardless, we imagine that those who did found quite a bit to like here.
After all, we like the show when it moves to more of the bottle-episode sort of format. The entire episode was set at a party hosted by Maya for charity, and the good news is that there was a whole lot of money donated to good causes. The bad news? That is about the only positive thing that came out of this event for anyone involved. Marty and Jeannie were desperate to use this as a way to solidify relations between Maya and Ellis Hightower so that the merge would go off without a hitch, and instead, chaos was spawned at almost every turn.
While it appeared at first that Marty dodged a major bullet when Ellis played nice and donated money to her charity, he completely disrespected her later by talking about her company like garbage. Once Maya was ready to not participate in the merger, Marty had to go to his dirty tactics: Showing her that this merger was a better alternative than letting a big oil company completely crush her. That was not appreciated either.
Marty and Jeannie seem to have egg on their faces, and so does Clyde for a completely different reason after getting romantically shut down. There’s just something about this guy’s failures in the romance department that we find strangely endearing.
While it was somewhat bizarre that the Monica cliffhanger from last week meant nothing here, we loved the pace and the wit of tonight’s “House of Lies.” Easily, this was one of the season’s stronger episodes. Grade: B+.
