‘The Mindy Project’ spoilers: Mindy Kaling explains shocking Mindy – Danny development
How about this for a surprise when it comes to “The Mindy Project”? Given that “New Girl” is the Fox comedy that features a pregnant star in Zooey Deschanel, you would think that this is the show that would choose to write in a major pregnancy into the story.
However, as it turns out, that is not the case. It was revealed during Tuesday night’s episode that Mindy is expecting a child with Danny, and this is the sort of game-changer that will shake up their lives and definitely their relationship forever. This also was not just some idea that Mindy Kaling came up with overnight, either; as she tells TVLine in an interview about the episode, it is something that the show has been thinking about putting on the air for a little while:
“We talked about accidental pregnancy since the beginning of Season 1. Nothing is funnier to me than an OB-GYN impregnating another OB-GYN accidentally. They, of all people, should know better … Mindy thinks of herself as impossibly young, and that she has many years left before she needs to seriously think about kids. We have been writing her as particularly job-focused, so this is definitely a surprise.”
We have to admit that when we first thought about this as a possible storyline a few weeks ago (we know that this is a show that likes to take risks), we were very concerned. Comedies always struggle with introducing children into the world. It’s hard, since it shifts almost the entire focus of what life should be about. You also have to find that balance where the characters are spending enough time with the kid without making the entire show about them all of the time. That is not often an easy thing to do.
Nonetheless, “The Mindy Project” has never been a show to go about things in a by-the-book fashion, which is probably why you should be more excited than nervous right now. This will be such a shock to Dr. Lahiri’s system that it will be fun to watch.
