‘Shameless’ season 5, episode 4 reaction: What does Jimmy’s return mean for Fiona?

There is something rather funny about the storyline from Sunday night’s episode of “Shameless,” mostly in that we managed to somehow be both completely surprised, and then not surprised at all, to find out that Fiona decided to marry Gus. Of course, this was the character choosing to make a rash, impulsive move to be with someone she has only known for a matter of weeks. However, this is Fiona we’re talking about here! This is largely her M.O., and while she has improved herself in many ways, she still has certain weaknesses. Men are one of them.

So what will happen now when it comes to her and a man from her past in Jimmy? Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Nancy Pimental makes it clear that he will have an impact on her, but Emmy Rossum’s character also has to do a good job making it clear that she is not the same Fiona that she has been in the past:

“What it does is it shakes up her marriage, but she comes to realize that, in some ways, it’s two separate things. Yes, Jimmy disrupted her marriage, but she also knows she’s a different person now and being with Jimmy is the old Fiona. It also makes her realize that just because she disrupts her marriage, she also did make this commitment to be married and she hasn’t gotten to know Gus and she does want to do things differently.”

Ultimately, we suspect that there will be many other changes and surprises that come up before we get to the end of this season, so we should probably wait to see how some of those play out before making too many rash judgments.
