‘Shameless’ season 5, episode 4 video: Frank’s ‘celebration’

Is anything ever going to work out for Frank Gallagher on “Shameless”? Despite how sure of himself he seems to be in the sneak peek below from Sunday’s episode, we’re still inclined to think that the answer to that is “no.”

In this preview, William H. Macy’s character wakes up following a bender, completely covered in pigeon crap and wondering why in the world a police officer is bothering him. (Here’s a clue: He looks homeless!) He tells the cop that he is celebrating, mostly because it is his “last day below the poverty line.” He is getting ready to pick up an insurance payout, and to him, this will change almost everything.

Maybe part of the joy that comes in watching this preview is knowing what happens on the other side. Showtime has already made it clear that Frank’s whole dream here is not going to work out as planned, as he will find out that something has happened to cause his payout to disappear in a metaphorical cloud of smoke. It’s pretty terrible to be him right now, but then again, we feel like it is probably always terrible to be him.

For those who are wondering or are new to the show, the network always tends to air new episodes against the Super Bowl. It is a nice bit of counter-programming, and there are also no real concerns about live viewers. They know that those who love the show will continue to watch regardless, and may pick it up during the week.
