NBC’s ‘The Voice’: Blake Shelton and a Benedict Cumberbatch – Jimmy Fallon surprise!
What do Blake Shelton and Benedict Cumberbatch have in common? As we’ve learned, nothing. As a matter of fact, the country singer has no idea whatsoever who the “Sherlock” star even is.
This moment was one of the highlights from the “Voice” coach’s appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Thursday night, as he previewed his hosting gig / musical guest performance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Jimmy first tried to sing Blake’s own single “Neon Light” back to him, and in turn seemed to forget the vast majority of the lyrics and even the melody. Then, Jimmy roped him into playing some sort of whisper game that was not the finest thing that he and the producers have ever thought of. As a matter of fact, we sort of sympathize with Blake here when he said that this was one of the dumbest things that he has ever seen done.
We’ve been critical of Fallon in some ways, given that we don’t think that he is the best late-night host and this outing didn’t really do much to change our minds. If you want to listen to a fascinating interview, there are about 12 better shows of this format that you can listen to. However, at the same time there are also things that Jimmy does well, and his silly love for random games plays well off of Blake’s too-cool-for-school persona. We don’t really think we would have seen a better interview with him on another show, so just trying to get him to lash out at Jimmy was worthwhile entertainment.
Hopefully, we’ll have another “SNL” preview featuring Blake soon, so be on the lookout for that. (Click here to see the one he already recorded.)
