Oscars 2015: ‘Dick Poop’ makes Cheryl Boone Isaacs instant TV, internet star
Given that we are a site focusing first and foremost on the world of television, we did not necessarily see that much value in being up incredibly early this morning to watch the Oscar nominations get announced. How in the world would reading off the names of movies we haven’t quite cared about until now suddenly become important?
Well, “Dick Poop” happened. The greatest and most immature meme of the year was started this morning when Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs made the terrible gaffe while announcing the nominees for Best Cinematography. She meant to say Dick Pope when discussing his nomination for “Mr. Turner,” but that did not quite work out. What makes this even more hilarious, even on an Adele Dazeem level, is that Isaacs previously pronounced correctly a dozen or so names that were so much easier to get wrong. All she had to do here is say “Pope,” like the guy in the Vatican who wears the giant hat. Alas, it couldn’t quite work out for her.
“Dick Poop” has trended on Twitter basically ever since, but there’s nothing you can do other than laugh about it. Obviously, this was just a silly mistake, and these sort of things do happen in your life. Granted, you tend to hope that they will at a time when there are not tens of millions of people around the world watching you, and most of them have no real knowledge of what you contributed to the industry.
The 2015 Oscars are hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, and air on ABC come Sunday, February 22. Let’s hope that there are no more gaffes! (Oh wait, who are we kidding? We’re rooting for it.)
