‘American Idol XIV’ preview: Will Joey Cook impress the judges?

Sometimes, it is pretty clear who is going to be a standout on “American Idol” from the early going, and this time around, we’re talking about Joey Cook. It is pretty easy, almost in a split second really, to figure out that she is going to be somebody who stands out almost right away with the judges.

Obviously, the visual alone makes her stand out. You don’t see many people with her hair color on TV, or her quirky sense of style. She’s one of the most original contestants we’ve seen, and judging from all the instruments she plays, we’re pretty confident that this is not some fake-out silly audition, either. The big question that remains is what exactly her singing voice will sound like.

We’re excited about her as a performer mostly because she is one of those contestants who we probably would not have seen on the show a decade or so ago. Slowly, we’re seeing this show become a little more supportive of indie artists, and some of them have gone on to do very well. There are part of even many winners, such as Phillip Phillips and David Cook, who have some of those musical sensibilities.

Joey says that she is committed to doing really well, and says that one of the reasons she is auditioning is to make her grandfather happy, since he always wanted her to try out for the show. This is that opportunity.
