Golden Globes 2015: Ricky Gervais skewers Katie Holmes, Meryl Streep in return
We’ve said it before, and we’re sure that we will say it many more times over the next few years: We’ve always been somewhat of a Ricky Gervais defender when it comes to the Golden Globes … for the most part. The Jodie Foster joke was over the line, but for the most part, we’ve really enjoyed just how uncomfortable he tends to make people while he is on stage at this show, drink in hand and smirk on his face.
Before presenting an award tonight to Amy Adams, Gervais (pictured in this old promotional image for the show) decided to do his typical shtick, claiming that he is not going to insult any of the celebrities in attendance before proceeding to do that to a variety of different people who have done “terrible” things to get to where they are today. This list including in his mind Meryl Streep and George Clooney … maybe. It is actually his joke about Katie Holmes being a part of this group that will probably get the most attention.
Why? You don’t have to read between the lines here to know that he was probably making a Tom Cruise reference without having to actually say his name out loud.
Obviously, someone is probably going to be upset and/or offended by some of what Ricky said, and if we know him, he probably would not have it any other way. this is what the guy strives for in some ways!
What do you think about Ricky’s return to the show, and do you think that he should be back to host the show in a much larger capacity? Share with a comment.
