Is ‘Mike & Molly’ working towards a renewal on CBS?

Mike & Molly -Over the past two years, “Mike & Molly” has really been quite the strange case on CBS. It feels at times like the show wants to bury it, and we cannot understand why. It’s a Chuck Lorre show for one, and it also has a big star in Melissa McCarthy on board.

The funny thing here, though, is that no matter when the show comes on the air, it still seems to do a pretty solid job of getting good ratings. Take, for example, last night. Despite being on in the holiday season (a terrible time for TV) and surrounded by repeats, the show still drew a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This was the top-rated program on Monday night, and it really was not that close.

Do we think that this is promising news for a season 6 renewal? Sure, and for a number of different reasons. For example, CBS needs to have at least a good just-in-case show, in the event that they have a show or two that bomb on their schedule. “The Millers” has already been canceled, and we sense that “The McCarthys” will be gone soon, as well. “Two and a Half Men” is ending, and with the fate of “The Odd Couple” still to be seen, what else does the network have beyond just “Mom” and “The Big Bang Theory” to rely on?

Also, we figure that the odds for another season are helped by the simple fact that the cast is contracted to do another season. McCarthy is getting a ton of film offers these days, but the good thing about sitcoms is that with that schedule, you can do these shows and still have time to do other work.
