‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Why Martin Freeman’s ‘Hobbit Office’ is so funny

SNL -Typically, “Saturday Night Live” does not repeat many of its episodes so soon after they air. With this in mind, we are somewhat surprised to see that this weekend’s scheduled program is the Martin Freeman / Charli XCX installment, which is really just a matter of two weeks old.

With that being said, one of the real luxuries of this episode is that it does allow for an opportunity to watch “Hobbit Office” once again, which to us is probably one of the top five sketches of the whole season so far. This nails on so many different things, with one of the biggest ones being merely a spoof of “The Office,” and a great reference to all the different things that Freeman has done over the years.

The show actually does a better job spoofing the comedy series than it does the “Hobbit” franchise. Bobby Moynihan does a great job of combining the David Brent / Michael Scott characters, and then adding a little bit of Gandalf and an extra dose of silliness to top things off. Meanwhile, major kudos to Taran Killam for a scene-stealing Gollum here that serves as yet another reminder of how underrated he is the majority of the time.

If there is a qualm you can have with watching this sketch back, it is knowing that despite its many laugh-out-loud moments, it never really goes anywhere in the end. There is not so much a story as there is a series of moments that will make you smile. It’s probably just a step below the Tina Fey – “Girls” spoof as one of our favorite TV parodies on the show in a long time.
