2015 Golden Globes: ‘Transparent,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘The Knick,’ ‘The Affair’ among surprises

There are bad nominations at awards shows, and then there are the ones that you are happy to see, even if you never expected them to happen in a million years.

For this article, we’re talking about all sorts of Golden Globe surprises. Sometimes, this is a nominee that deserved it, and got the recognition they deserve. For others, it is a snub that is actually smart, and shows that the Hollywood Foreign Press is following the beat of its own drum.

Clive Owen getting nominated for “The Knick” – Hooray! Hopefully this brings some attention to the show.

“Jane the Virgin” and Gina Rodriguez getting love – These are the first Globes nominations ever for a CW series, and we couldn’t be happier. Hopefully this opens the door for some other worthy shows to get attention.

“Transparent” – Also, this show and Jeffrey Tambor have received the first nominations ever for Amazon. Good on them.

“The Affair” getting so much love – After the snub at the SAG Awards, the Showtime drama scored three big nominations today.

No “Modern Family” – After years of dominance, we are actually going to get a chance to see some other shows finally win awards.

Ricky Gervais, “Derek” – Given how much he mocked the Hollywood Foreign Press as host, we weren’t quite sure he would ever receive another nomination.

Too much “American Horror Story” – Hooray for Kathy Bates, but should Jessica Lange really get a nomination for playing basically the same character as in “Coven,” just without magic?
