Is ‘Gracepoint’ canceled before finale, or does it even matter?
Thursday night marks the end of the road for “Gracepoint” on Fox, and while its ending appears to be pretty clear and definitive, the subject of the show’s future is still worthy of at least a quick discussion.
Let’s start first and foremost here by talking about one simple issue: What we know for a fact. “Gracepoint” is for certain ending on Fox this coming week, and the network is even making sure to promote the last episode as a series finale. Why go in this direction? Clearly, it ties into how they know for certain that they are not renewing the show, and they therefore do not see a reason to promote it with even the slightest semblance of hope.
Now that we have said all of this, we can definitely imagine some out there who would argue that this entire conversation is mostly moot, because there were never any intentions that Fox had of bringing the show back in the first place. Whether or not this is true is something that could be debated for a long time. We feel like the network probably would end the show without question if it was even a slightly bigger hit than it ended up being.
However, what if the series managed to become a real smash? Would they have still decided to pull the plug? We find ourselves most curious about this, and at the same time still very much unsure. We feel like had the ratings been large enough for the show during its run, they would have at least created a new story, maybe a combination of what “The Following” did and what “Fargo” is in the process of pulling off.
So basically, the show is canceled … sort of. It was always the plan for it to end this way, except for in the event it became the next “True Detective.” Then, maybe there would have been other thoughts.

Chris Chibnall said in a podcast interview that he originally wrote Broadchurch as a thirteen episode story. He pitched ten to ITV and they commissioned eight episodes. He said that he wrote two drafts of the story, and filmed the second one. He said that he wrote an alternate ending in case the original got spoiled… and that Gracepoint uses one of the alternate endings. He also said that, when he pitched it to ITV, he told them he already had an idea for a second series if the original was successful…. and ITV told him, let’s see how this goes and if it goes well, we will talk about a second series…. of course it did well, and they went on to film the idea he had for a second series. They stated in another article that Chibnall did not write a whole new series in response to it being a hit; they used the idea he had already had.
Here is another article on the subject:
INTERVIEWER: If Gracepoint does really well on Fox, will they do another season?
TENNANT: Yes, there’s always an eye for that, isn’t there, with almost everything on television. We have to wait and see how the audience responds to it. Broadchurch is going to a second season, so there’s no reason why Gracepoint shouldn’t. There’s a template there. Although, a second season of Gracepoint might go off in a very different way. Who knows? All these things are to be decided. We’re all very excited about Gracepoint premiering. I just want America to take to it in the way that the UK did because it was an extraordinary thing to be a part of. Even as objective as I can be, I think it’s a fantastic story that people will be thrilled by.
