‘Girl Meets World’ episode 16: Did the Cory – Shawn reunion make you smile?

Girl Meets World -Throughout the first season of “Girl Meets World,” we have found ourselves at various times nursing some very mixed opinions about the show. While we do very much enjoy it, we also have felt that it has strayed too much from the original show at times. Also, it has taken a very hardline stance on making sure almost every episode has some sort of moral or message to it.

What made tonight’s new episode of show very strong is that it brought so many classic elements of the series back into the fold, and above all else, it really gave longtime fans a number of different reasons to check in the show.

It was almost surprising to us to see just how emotional the show made the return of Shawn Hunter into the fold, and the reasons why. He felt left out after Cory and Topanga welcomed Riley into the world, and there are many reasons why. When there are children in the mix, people start to have less time for friends. This led to what was now a reasonable divide between the two characters.

The only thing that was somewhat strange about watching this episode as a whole was just the overall sense of ambiguity surrounding what we were really watching. Was this a story about Christmas, Thanksgiving, or something else? It was about friendship, but we wish the backdrop had been at least partially more clear.

Still, it was nice to see “Girl Meets World” really focus on the parents more for a change, and set the stage for something still to come.
