‘Top Chef: Boston’ episode 6 review: Was Gregory Gourdet’s goose cooked?

Top Chef -Yes, that is a very obvious title for this “Top Chef: Boston” article, but at least it turns out to not be as big of a spoiler as it could have been.

For those of you who are savvy about the ways of reality TV editing, you probably saw the misdirection tonight coming from a mile away. It may have seemed for a good while on Wednesday night’s new episode like Gregory Gourdet was on his way out the door, but that turned out to not be the case, even after his goose dish at the Thanksgiving Dinner was a little flawed due to the nature of the protein.

Instead, the eliminated chef here was Stacy Cogswell, who seemed to suffer mostly from the pressure of being the local chef, and also just being the worst on a really good night. For some reason, cooking outdoors with basic ingredients brought the best out of everyone in a way that we didn’t see coming. Gregory was in the bottom, and Katsuji Tanabe continued his recent winning ways by taking home the top prize for the first time solo in an Elimination Challenge. Not bad given that he was completely bailed out by immunity two episodes ago.

There was a little humor in the episode, from the obvious Ocean Spray product placement (which we actually didn’t mind, since it involved a cranberry bog) to the chefs having to pretend it was Thanksgiving in the summer when this was filmed. Also, total pandering to the first pilgrims and also Native Americans at the end of the episode, but we were actually moved by the way one of the tribe members spoke about keeping those traditions alive.

Despite us not being fooled by the Gregory edit, this was still a really fun episode as a whole that reminds us of why we enjoy “Top Chef” so much. Hopefully, the rest of the season marks more of the same. Grade: A-.
