NBC’s ‘The Voice’ introduces wild-card twist; Meghan Trainor, Diana Ross, more to advise.
Tonight, “The Voice” started things off with a surprising announcement: There’s going to be a wild-card element to the show this season! Basically, how this is going to work is that viewers are going to have a chance to vote for their favorite act eliminated from the competition, and they will eventually make it to the final four.
As a twist, we like that it keeps all the contestants in play … but it is kind of crazy when it comes to fairness. Basically, someone eliminated tonight could be in the finale, and that seems almost counter-intuitive to what this competition should be about. Then again, it’s more social-media activity for the show! That’s what they are really looking for these days.
Also, Diana Ross, Colbie Caillat, Meghan Trainor and Patrick Stump are all set to advise. How many people does this show really need to throw into a single season in this role? This is really getting to be a too many cooks sort of situation, meaning that someone is probably going to be needing that ten-minute viral video featuring “Voice” personalities pretty soon.
While we don’t love all of these twists, we will at least give the show a small amount of credit for at least continuing to give some of these a try. They didn’t have to do that, and they are trying obviously to improve on what have been some slowly declining ratings as of late. Maybe this will draw at least a few more viewers.

Dancing with the Stars used the Wild Card early on and found that it was bad thing.
