‘Arrow’ season 3, episode 6 review: It’s Cupid, stupid
For the second straight week, “Arrow” gave us an episode on The CW that had mostly excited by the last sixty seconds. As for the rest of the hour, it was strong, but did not set us up on a trajectory that will last the rest of the season.
We learned through this episode that Roy was not Sara Lance’s killer, which has to be one of the most unsurprising reveals ever. We’ve found out instead that he has been experiencing some bad tries that are tied to what he actually did, which was kill a police officer back on the show last season. This was something we knew was going to come back eventually, and now was the best time for it to.
Ultimately, what we are perhaps the happiest about is that “Arrow” told an entire story about Roy that had nothing to do with Thea. He was able to stand on his own two feet a little, and that was appreciated. The only thing that we would have enjoyed more is seeing where this guy lives, and how he spends some of his down time, similar to what we had when Felicity Smoak was the star of the show on this past episode.
Then again, this wasn’t just a “Roy episode.” It was also very much about Laurel, and some of what she was going through in an effort to secure Ted Grant’s freedom as he was accused of a string of murders carried out by his protegee. This entire story was very on the nose in how Ted’s situation mirrored Oliver and Roy, and how Oliver’s time in Hong Kong (which is still somewhat confusing) enabled him to help.
We probably sound like we’re being hard, and we should say that this episode did a whole lot right, as well. The action sequences were great, Laurel took a step further towards becoming the Black Canary, and Felicity and Roy proved to be a fun pairing onscreen. So long as this is the Roy Harper we’re getting, we have no problem signing off on him.
Oh, and Cupid’s here, and we’re absolutely thrilled. That closing line as to be one of the best in the entire series. Grade: B+.
