Ratings: CBS’ lineup of ‘2 Broke Girls’ season 4, ‘The Millers’ season 2 sinking
Should CBS be considering something new for their Monday comedy block? Maybe it’s a little early to sound the alarm, but we figuring out more and more that this once-great lineup now barely has a pulse.
For example, “2 Broke Girls” (1.9 in the 18-49 demographic) is proving that it is no “How I Met Your Mother.” It’s a crude, sometimes-funny show, but the problem here is that we cannot name a single person who is a diehard fan of it, and would spend hours speculating about it or dressing up as their favorite characters.
Still, at least it has something over “The Millers” (1.5), which is starting to make us think that Sean Hayes is cursed. Since “Will & Grace,” every project he’s been on has struggled in some way. “Smash” didn’t go far, “Sean Saves the World” was a flop, and here, the numbers are down dramatically versus season 1. To be fair, though, it had a good lead-in last year, and we’re seeing proof now that without “The Big Bang Theory,” it is not going anywhere fast.
What CBS is going through right now is basically the same series of growing pains that everyone else is dealing with when it comes to comedy. They’re all having to realize that you cannot just put the same-old things on the air in the DVR / Netflix age, and anticipate having people watch. You have to challenge, and bring in some shows that are genuinely funny from the get-go. Nobody has the patience anymore for a show to find its way; heck, we don’t even know if “Parks and Recreation” or “30 Rock” would have survived if they were just starting out now.
What do you think: Are these ratings just indicative of disappointing CBS shows, or is it more a statement about comedy as a whole? Share in the comments, and to get some further TV updates via our CarterMatt Newsletter, sign up over at the link here. (Photo via CBS.)

Sean Hays isn’t helping The Millers. Plus its. lead in is not great. I liked The Millers better without Sean Hays. Margo Martindale is a gem and a hoot and half. Hopefully, it can be salvaged when it moves to Thursdays in January. My advice for The Millers is that if it gets a third season, stay on Thursdays and drop Sean Hays. 2 Broke Girls could be cancelled or moved to 8:30 on Mondays with Mike and Molly at 8 on Mondays.
