‘Selfie’ cancellation: Karen Gillan reacts to ABC’s decision

Selfie -This weekend proved to be a rough one for Karen Gillan, at least other than the time she may have spent watching the “Doctor Who” finale. (We like to imagine mentally this happening.)

Yesterday, the verdict officially came in for her low-rated comedy “Selfie,” which was given the ax by ABC after a handful of episodes on the air. We really feel bad for her and the cast and crew on this occasion; we didn’t like the pilot, but we have always said time and time again that this does not have to be a death sentence for a show. You can come back and try to make something special, and that is what we really feel like this entire group did. Ultimately, it is somewhat of a shame that the improvement in quality was not enough to give the show a major step up.

Unfortunately, ABC didn’t do the show many favors given it no proper lead-in, and also the simple fact that there were no huge American stars at the center of it. Placing it up against “The Voice” for a good chunk of its season also certainly did not help.

We’ll close here with one chilling fact when it comes to the comedy genre. “Black-ish” and “Marry Me” are the one ones right now to be given extra episodes that premiered this fall; meanwhile, “A to Z,” “Bad Judge,” this show, “Mulaney,” and “Manhattan Love Story” have all been canceled already. It’s getting harder and harder to be a comedy these days.
