Jay Leno appears on ‘Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,’ is both funny and obnoxious
Does distance make the heart grow fonder? Maybe it does when you are watching Jay Leno on a late-night comedy show.
We were never the biggest fan of Jay’s during the entirety of his time on “The Tonight Show,” but there was something about his return last night that actually drew a few laughs from us. Maybe it was that this was the first appearance in a while, or maybe it was because this felt more like the edgy Jay Leno of the 1980s, the one that actually shocked people on the comedy circuit and what got him “The Tonight Show” in the first place over David Letterman.
Did Jay come across as a little bitter during his interview with Jimmy Fallon? Sure, since he spent the majority of it consistently making fun of the guy, from his hands to his lack of experience with cars. The truth here, though, is that while Fallon is a better variety performer and a much-better host for this generation, he’s not a very good interviewer. His guests tend to walk all over him, and he seems consistently excited about EVERYTHING. Somehow, the man is a fan of just about every little thing that has ever been created.
After watching all of this, we almost hope that Leno comes back maybe once a year to perpetually put Fallon through the wringer. More than anything, though, we wish that Leno would go on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” just to see these two titans go at it head-to-head in comedy war. Letterman’s show may be pretty by-the-book at this point, but he remains one of the best interviewers around.
