‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 7, episode 8 review: Bobby’s survival; Abel unravels; Juice, Jax wait
For an episode of “Sons of Anarchy” that was 90 minutes long, wouldn’t you have thought that there would be more in the way of actual action during tonight’s “The Separation of Crows”? This was a story that brought many threads to the table, but chose to left many of them dangle in the wind after the shocking “Greensleeves” last week.
For one, Bobby is still alive, but without the use of some of his fingers now. August Marks and his men seem more than happy to continue to piece him apart until they get everything that they want. The same goes for Juice, though it is his sanity that might be losing some of its luster behind bars. His moves and deal-making with Unser are starting to raise alarms about his motives, and we feel more and more like Wayne is going to be the one to figure out for certain just what happened with Tara.
Perhaps the most interesting developments of the night came within the Teller family itself tonight, in between the horrific imagery of Gemma’s crows to young Abel starting to fall apart at the seams. Over the past few weeks, he has engaged in increasingly violent behavior, and his actions with a lunchbox are the latest endeavor. It’s shocking to see Courtney Love in such a role as concerned teacher, but she plays it very well.
Clearly, Abel is going to have his voice heard in some way before this story comes to an end, and it is probably not going to be a way that benefits Jax or the Sons in any way. While all of this was happening, Jax was perched in many ways like a crow himself, looking over most of the action. He’s waiting to see if Lin is murdered, and to figure out the course of events with Bobby. Shooting Jury at this point felt like an inevitability; he was a man almost waiting for this to happen, and while the character had his moments, we’re just glad that we won’t get him and Jarry confused anymore when saying their names out loud.
We’re personally waiting for the other show to drop, and while this “Sons of Anarchy” was certainty engaging, we would like a slightly faster pace given that there are now only five episodes left to tie things together. Grade: B.
