‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 10, episode 4 video: Patrick Demsey, Ellen Pompeo, and tension

On Thursday night’s “Grey’s Anatomy” episode, things are going to get very tense, very quickly between the characters of Meredith and Derek.

In the sneak peek below, you can see Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey’s characters engaging in a heck of a back-and-forth on one very simple subject: Whether or not they are going to be able to handle the stress of the decisions that they’ve made. Now that Derek has decided to not go to Washington to take part in the high-profile work there, he expects Meredith to have some enormous medical breakthrough almost overnight. Unfortunately for him, that is not happening, and he’s getting upset about it.

We ultimately see both sides of this argument, mostly in that Derek wanted Meredith to be happier for him when he first was offered the opportunity than she was. She also wanted him to not go to Washington, but she didn’t want to be the reason why. Meanwhile, she wants her work to be treated as seriously as his, and there are times when she feels like he has looked down on some of her accomplishments.

There is almost surely not going to be any clear resolution to this storyline Thursday during “Only Mama Knows,” since this feels so much more like something that the show will be working and wrestling to figure out for quite a long time. It’s certainly possible that the two could end up divorced, but what we enjoy about this story for now is that it doesn’t seem to be heading down that road.
