‘Chicago Fire’ season 3, episode 4 preview: Can Taylor Kinney’s Severide save his own life?

The premise behind Tuesday night’s “Chicago Fire” episode is one that is so solid, it’s almost hard to do anything other than to get completely behind it: Kelly Severide has been a hero responsible for saving the lives of many, but can he save himself?

This situation, as devastating as it may be for Taylor Kinney’s character, may be the biggest thing to challenge him yet. It also could be what forces him to not take his own life for granted after what happened with Shay. He has been struggling (and drinking) ever since the premiere, and he has to figure out now just what sort of man he wants to be moving forward.

With all of this being said, the situation that he finds himself in during the episode Tuesday is clearly of no fault of his own. After all, it seems as though he was merely aboard the subway when someone with a gun gets on board, and puts him in a life-or-death situation. Given that, it’s going to be hard to call up Voight, Lindsay, or anyone on “Chicago PD” for a little bit of help.

This situation will test him, and other than an excellent story and a great chance for Kinney to play something intense, the question that we wonder right now is this: What sort of man will emerge on the other side? This will most-likely be the story that really makes or breaks this character as we see them the rest of the season.

We’re always going to be rooting for Kelly. He’s one of the most layered, interesting people in the firehouse, and he’s also the one who needs a victory the most at the moment. Hopefully, he can consider getting through all of this as one.
