‘The Following’ season 3 spoilers: Ryan Hardy (briefly) looks happy in new trailer
There is a part of us that really wants to quit “The Following.” The stories are insane, and it felt almost for the entire second season like the story was flying by the seat of its pants and the themes and characters were changing on a week-to-week basis.
However, the power of this series is almost hypnotic in the same way that Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) can occasionally be. While you know that there is something sinister coming, you cannot turn away. This is why when we watched the second-second trailer below (first posted by TV Guide), we were immediately just as captivated as ever before.
Part of that may simply be due to the way that Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is starting out this season: Happy, for a change. He has a new woman in his life, and seems to finally be moving on from so much of the pain and heartbreak that he has been dealt over the past several years. You see him at a wedding in the trailer, and his daughter Max (Jessica Stroup) seems just as happy as he is in the arms of a new man. We’re kind of happy in this case that she moved on from Mike (Shawn Ashmore), since that made things a little too weird for our taste (and we acknowledge greatly that this is a weird show).
Then, of course things go very south in the blink of an eye. There are still monsters and ghosts from Ryan’s past, and before this run is over, he almost has to pay the piper for some of these choices. Joe and Mark (Sam Underwood) are also still out there, and he has to uncover where they are, and just what they could be up to … at least in time. He may have started to just hope that they were never coming back.
