‘How to Get Away with Murder’ episode 2 review: Keating fights for her truth

How to Get Away with Murder -Last week, ABC got off to a fantastic start with “How to Get Away with Murder.” It was an intense show, but also one with occasional moments of levity. Basically, it fits like a glove into this TGIT lineup that the network has come up with. (Really, they should just change it to TGFSR, or Thank God for Shonda Rhimes, even if she didn’t technically create this show.)

What we learned on tonight’s episode is that Annalise Keating is brilliant at what she does, but she takes her job to the point of obsession. She cannot let go of any case or any lead that she is starting to sniff out, and that does create a climate of trouble for her. Her plea to her mistress Nate at the end of the episode to further investigate her evidence, even though it is not her case, is further proof of that.

We don’t have any belief at the moment that Keating is a great person, but we don’t really feel that way about almost anyone on this show. That is what makes it so interesting. You don’t quite know what any character’s motivation is, which is in so many ways both a blessing and a curse. The obvious problem here is that if you don’t know motivation, then it becomes so much harder to figure someone out.

The biggest problem with the show right now is mostly that: Confusion, especially when you go between the future and the present. It’s hard enough to figure out where all of Keating’s students are and where they stand in our primary setting, but in these flash forwards it’s even more complicated. The message Wes relayed to Rebecca in the end was that the deed is done, and we have to mostly see where this particular story is going to unfold. Grade: B.
