Tonight, “Dancing with the Stars” did a rather perplexing thing: Having more results without really any performances to further showcase us what some of the celebrities could do. There was a part of us hoping for a non-elimination tonight.
It did feel, though, like there could be a shock tonight. Tommy Chong and Michael Waltrip have solid fan followings, so even though they may not be great dancers, they will likely stick around for a while. Meanwhile, dancers with smaller followings may be sent home earlier than you would think.
The dancers who were in severe danger of going home this week were Jonathan Bennett & Allison Holker, Randy Couture & Karina Smirnoff, and Antonio Sabato Jr. & Cheryl Burke. We don’t believe that any of these guys is the worst in the competition, but we don’t see any of them having the bases that you need to win this competition. Just ask Tavis Smiley. Randy’s probably the most famous of the three stars in the bottom, but we don’t know how many MMA fans watch a ballroom competition.
In the end, the voting public decided to send home Randy … which stinks. We feel like his presence on the show was almost important in a way. He proved further that not all fighters are just some hulking guys who have no other interests. He was interesting, and we like Karina as a pro. The one thing that may have hurt him is simply that fighters don’t have a great history on this show, and Antonio and Jonathan may have more of their actual fans watching this show.
