‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 8, episode 3 preview: Howard prepares for the first pitch

The idea for Monday’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory” really qualifies well as one of those stories that you really thought would have been a subject for an episode ages ago.

Then again, it wasn’t really possible until Howard got renown as an astronaut. Basically the Angels want him to throw out a first pitch at a game, and he tries to do everything that he can to prevent falling on his face and being humiliated.

Do we think that Howard will really be able to pull that off? Probably not, but this is what actually makes this hilarious. It also seems like such a ripe opportunity to play up just how un-athletic most of these guys are, and mow they will probably all embarrass themselves in another way as they prepare. There are not a whole lot of opportunities that the show has really now to actually push these people out of their comfort zone.

We feel like season 8 got off to a good start last week, and this is where the show needs to keep it going. What we’ll say for Howard is that we’re glad to see him working to advance professionally towards a Ph.D, just as we also are glad to see that his entire story is not about him and Bernadette trying to start a family. With some other shows, they would desperately spend time on trying to reinforce the whole “you must be a parent” thing after you get married. This show may be silly, but they are smart in that sense.
