‘Blue Bloods’ season 5 premiere review: Who died by episode’s end?

CBS LogoAfter many months away, “Blue Bloods” is back on the air, and they wasted no time unleashing their first shocker of the season: The show has lost an important piece of the puzzle.

While Javi Baez was not a regular character on the show, he is incredibly important to the story. Losing him will leave a major whole for his sister on the force, and she has to figure out a way to move forward from this … which is not going to be easy. This has to take the cake for being one of the most heartbreaking moments that we have seen unfold on an episode of this show over the years, and it does continue the strange and sad tradition of shows killing off characters this week. With that being said, we wouldn’t say that Javi’s death is as shocking as what happened on either “Bones” or “Chicago Fire” this week.

We see this episode as one that revolved largely around trust (hence the title “Partners”), and what that really means now. While it was tragic, there were also a few assorted light moments throughout. If you like the Jamie / Eddie relationship, for example, maybe this story gave you a sense that something will happen there … maybe. If you don’t like them together, then you may appreciate the idea of partners being just partners. That is a nice change from the TV norm, if it stays that way.

We were expecting at first something a little grander from the season premiere, but in the end, we feel like the last 15 minutes made up for it. Grade: B+.
