‘Under the Dome’: On season 3 renewal possibilities; season 2 finale expectations

Tonight, “Under the Dome” decides to finally close up shop after 13 episodes this summer, and before we do anything else, we have to ask the question right now: Is there hope for a third season to happen?

If we were to definitively answer that question right now, we would say that a season 3 for the series will happen. It is far too popular internationally, and has way too sweet of a deal with Amazon Prime, for the series to go in any other direction at the moment.

However, the recent ratings slide for the show’s second season should be enough still to make you wonder one thing: Could season 3 be the end, and should it? We’d argue that at this point, it should. There were too many moments this year where it felt like the story was meandering, and giving it that sort of urgency could be a good thing. Also, this isn’t like “Criminal Minds” or many of those other CBS shows that could just go on forever if you get the right people involved; there is only so long that this premise can work without getting even more ridiculous than it is right now.

So what can you expect tonight? Basically, keep a lookout for a possible big character death, and also a genuine debate as to whether or not someone really will be able to escape the dome. We’ve seen hints and teases and even full-fledged stories about this already with Barbie, but never on the scale that we are about to see for it.
