‘The Leftovers’ finale spoilers: Back to the present with Justin Theroux, cast

Tonight, HBO’s “The Leftovers” took itself on a very interesting detour, mostly in how they chose to handle the story of Kevin Garvey and company’s past, leading up to the events of the Departure. It was out of context a pretty great episode, but frustrating with its timing. The information would have been useful weeks ago, and it distracted us from the giant Patti shocker of her killing herself last week.

Now, we look forward to the finale, which is going to be coming in two weeks (no new episode over Labor Day Weekend). The title is “The Prodigal Son Returns,” and you can read more of what to expect in the synopsis:

An unexpected ally helps Kevin (Justin Theroux) get out of a jam near the town of Cairo. Meanwhile, an elaborate Memorial Day initiative by the Guilty Remnant plunges Mapleton into chaos. Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph) grants a final wish; Tom (Chris Zylka) copes with his new reality; Nora (Carrie Coon) makes a life-changing decision.”

We find ourselves now very conflicted as we wonder how in the world Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta plan on finishing up this season. We understand the need to stick with the vision of the show and the world that they have established, but it feels like there needs to be at least a subtle, more hopeful shift. After all, you want people to watch again next year! If it feels like Kevin and company are going to be constantly miserable, what is the point of being sucked in again?

What do you think is coming up on the finale for “The Leftovers”? Let us know right now.
