‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: How Geena Davis will fit into the world
“Grey’s Anatomy” loves their big-name guest stars, and this time around, there really is no one bigger than Geena Davis. The former “Commander-in-Chief” has a significant recurring role throughout at least the early part of season 11, and thanks to this and her own prestige you have to wonder: Is this meant to be the new Cristina Yang on the show?
As it turns out, the answer to that is “hardly.” Davis may be a replacement for Christina professionally, but she is not going to be the new BFF for Dr. Meredith Grey. Not only that, but there will not be a single character on this show who ends up filling the void left by Sandra Oh. Just take a look at what showrunner Shonda Rhimes had to say to TVLine:
“There is a hole left by the loss of Meredith’s best friend, and we do not try to fill it — at all. That wouldn’t make sense.”
Ultimately, we’re glad that Rhimes at least sees this and understands this. After all, we are not quite sure that everyone else associated in TV really does. They constantly think of roles as a series of voids that need to be filled, and with one person who leaves, someone else jumps right into that position. The reason why it is so good that this is not happening with this character is strictly because neither Davis nor anyone else could ever replace the Cristina character. They would have to meet expectations of the fans, and that in itself feels like a pretty impossible task.
