‘The Leftovers’ finale spoilers: First look at ‘The Prodigal Son Returns’

While you may still have a little time before the season finale of “The Leftovers” airs on HBO, we want to give you a slight heads-up in advance here on what will be coming up b around the time the show comes to an end … for now. As you may have heard earlier this week, the show has been officially renewed now for a second season!

The finale episode is entitled “The Prodigal Son Returns,” and it will air on the same exact day as the “Boardwalk Empire” finale on Sunday, September 7. Why not the week prior? Blame Labor Day Weekend. HBO obviously wants the lead-in, and they also do not want to strand the show on an island. For some further details in terms of what to expect, just take a look at the attached synopsis right now:

An unexpected ally helps Kevin (Justin Theroux) get out of a jam near the town of Cairo. Meanwhile, an elaborate Memorial Day initiative by the Guilty Remnant plunges Mapleton into chaos. Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph) grants a final wish; Tom (Chris Zylka) copes with his new reality; Nora (Carrie Coon) makes a life-changing decision.”

This episode is written by Damon Lindelof and the original source author Tom Perrotta, and while we know that we are not going to get answers on what happened, we do at least hope that there is some further clarity on the subject of what is up with the Guilty Remnant, and if some of these people will ever have hope again.
