NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 3 interview: When will David Slade direct again?
“Hannibal” is one of those shows that is really remarkable across the board, whether you are talking about the acting, the writing, the directing, and of course those who create the wonderful props and visual style that give the show its signature.
Two of the people who definitely deserve a ton of credit for the show’s success are executive producer Martha De Laurentiis (who also worked on many of the Hannibal films) and also executive producer / director David Slade. Slade helmed the finale, and what we learned from him that was particularly shocking at the Comic-Con press room this weekend was the crazy mixture of emotions he must have been feeling while working on the crazy cliffhanger with Will Graham, Alana Bloom, and Jack Crawford all seemingly dead after Hannibal’s offensive:
“When I was shooting that scene on location which was over two nights, we did not actually know if we were getting a third season. We had to come to grips with the fact that [this ending could be] ‘oh, no third season. Everybody dies!’ We were actually mixing the sound when we got the call. We were doing the final sound mix.”
De Laurentiis also further commented on how NBC tends to keep them waiting “so long” for any news on the show’s future, and the two had an optimistic viewpoint about the frequent Emmy snubs for the show: While it would be great to have the honors, they also still have the support of the fans. Not only that, but they also realize that some shows simply take a while to get the attention of voters. “Breaking Bad,” for example, did not win the Drama Series award until last year.
When it comes to what episode Slade is set to direct next, he said that showrunner Bryan Fuller has talked to him about taking on the fourth episode 3 of the season. Fuller told him that it suits his “sensibility” well, and he trusts him enough to prepare for that.
For those wondering, all of the characters we mentioned earlier in this article are going to return for season 3. With that being said, Laurence Fishburne is going to have a complicated schedule to work out, and Caroline Dhavernas is still coy about what her story will be about.
