‘Masters of Sex’ season 2, episode 2 review: Did Virginia grow a conscious?
Now that Bill Masters has made it clear to Virginia that he has no plans to leave his wife (even though he is incredibly unhappy in his marriage), where do things go from here for these two?
With Bill moving over to the new hospital, Virginia assumed that she would be going with him as his research assistant (or even as his secretary), but is surprised to learn that the hospital didn’t take them as a package deal and Bill is having trouble bringing her over.
Bill is quickly learning that there are many strings attached to his new job, including making an 18 year old sterile (after terminating a second pregnancy) because her parents are big donors to the hospital and they want the procedure done. He decides to talk to the patient, but is surprised to learn that she wants the procedure too. Bill decides not to do the procedure, telling the head of the hospital that there are real dysfunctions and instead offers the young girl birth control.
Vivian finally has her moment to tell off Virginia for stealing Ethan from her. It was exhilarating to see Virginia get some karma back, because as much as we like her, she doesn’t often think of the consequences of her actions. Virginia had originally hatched a plan to run Bill’s new secretary out of her job so that she can come back as his secretary, but after her talk with Vivian she feels bad doing wrong to others. She’s developed a bit of a conscious and it’s nice to see.
A few other things we learned in this episode: Barton has taken a leave of absence (is traveling Italy with his wife) and Bill learns the truth from Vivian about his attempted suicide. Lilian finds out that her cancer has started to move to other parts of her body and is now terminal. And last but not least Austin’s wife has left him and has taken the kids.
The big question is now that Virginia has developed a conscious, will she stop sleeping with Bill? Don’t count on it. There is something that draws these two together and they just won’t stop, even though we were secretly hoping to see Virginia put the brakes on their affair.. Episode grade: B-
