‘Halt and Catch Fire’ episode 8 preview: The preparations for COMDEX

Sunday’s “Halt and Catch Fire” may provide us with the most significant chapter in the journey of Joe MacMillan to date, and there is one very-specific reason for this: It will mark the biggest potential leap forward to date.

The name of the game right now is COMDEX, which was, as we said this past weekend, one of the biggest conventions for computer products at the time in which the show is set. Unfortunately for Joe and company, trying to get through this convention and making a substantial impact is not going to be a cakewalk at all. Instead, it’s going to be a chore. There are phone calls involved, reservations to receive, and so many more steps that need to be taken in an effort to actually ensure that this convention becomes something that really matters.

While there may be money and skill behind the group right now, think of Cardiff in the same vein as you would a business on “Shark Tank.” You have a good product, smart people, and a platform, but you still have to figure out a way to stand out and have your voice hear even though you’re in an environment where that is almost impossible to happen. You have to be creative, smart, and also appeal to a common denominator in order to get attention. The big boys have so many more people that you do, and you really just have to hope that no one else has the same idea you do. Otherwise, you are completely screwed.
